Saying “Good-Bye” To Clutter

Request a Quote

Organize your ShedDid you hear that whooshing sound? That is the sound of the year flying by so fast that you can expect to hear a sonic boom at any moment. Don’t worry, it happens to all of us. Seasons change faster than we can blink. Yesterday we still needed easy access to the lawn mower and today we are trying to persuade ourselves to start putting away Christmas decorations.

You might have noticed that as time speeds up, our storage sheds also seem to be getting more cluttered, leaving most of us scratching our heads at the phenomenon.

Eventually, whether through someone else’s nagging or a sudden burst of self-motivation, we all come to the conclusion that the storage shed NEEDS to be organized.

But where do we start?

If that question has kept you from tackling the much needed task of de-cluttering your shed, here is a basic list of how to organize your storage unit:

1. Start Small. Try not to think about taking on the entire job all at once; it’s too overwhelming. Start with one box in one corner of the shed and then move on from there.

2. Set a Time to Get the Job Done. Try breaking the task into smaller chunks of 30 to 45 minutes. Set a timer and make yourself top when it buzzer goes off. If you would rather do it all in one day, ask for help from family and close friends. Designate a weekend and write “Organize the Shed” in big letters on the family calender. Either way is fine; the important thing is to stick to it!

3. Should It Stay or Should It Go? Separate everything that you want to keep from the things that need to go. If you have trouble deciding whether or not to keep something, set it aside for a few weeks and then come back to it. It’s okay to give yourself some time to make a decision (as long as the “undecided” pile doesn’t fill the entire shed).

4. Donate. Just because you are getting rid of something doesn’t mean that it has to go in the trash. Donating gently used items is a great way to recycle and give to the community at the same time; plus you get a deduction the next time you file your taxes.

5. A Place for Everything and Everything In Its Place. Now that you have gone through everything, settle on a specific place for every item. Put the things you use most often near the entrance so that you can easily get to them. Installing shelves or hooks is also a great way to add more floor space for bigger items.

As a whole, organizing everything in your shed will not only make it easier to find what you are looking for, it also means that the same job will go quicker the next time you have to de-clutter.
