When you’ve decided it’s time to get a storage shed it’s important to know where to place it in your yard and what factors you should take into consideration. Whether it’s because the clutter around your house has built up too much or you need a private workspace, you have finally decided that a shed is exactly what you need. Now the only question that remains is where you will put this new addition to your property.
Where To Place Your Shed.
There are lots of different factors you have to consider when deciding where to place your storage shed. Your first step is to check into city and county building codes. Some municipalities require that you have a building permit and others also have specific requirements on how close your shed can be to other buildings, property lines, walls, etc. Your local Homeowner’s Association also might have restrictions on where and what type of shed you can have on your property. The last thing you want is to have a huge fine or have construction halted because you didn’t obtain the right permits.
At Hometown Sheds we’re happy to help you work within your HOA guidelines and have multiple options available to make sure you and your Homeowner’s Association are happy. Generic engineer plans are also available free of charge for any certified building.
Convenience is the next thing to keep in mind. If you want a personal office or a hobby space, how far are you willing to walk from your house in the rain, ice, or snow? Even if you just want a shed for storage, it is important to consider how often you will be needing the contents inside (i.e. storing your extra furniture vs the lawn mower).
How Your Shed Looks Matters.
When considering where to place your shed, don’t forget aesthetics. Will your new shed obstruct any of your favorite views? Do you want it to match your home’s vinyl siding, paint color or exterior? What about adding flower boxes if it is in public view or adding a porch to your shed to double as an entry area and a fun place to spend time.
Consider Your Yard.
Finally try to find a building area that won’t require a lot of earth moving over time. A flat, leveled area free of any tree stumps, power lines or hanging branches is ideal. Any fenced area needs to be large enough for a delivery truck to enter and easily navigate. Also consider where your septic tank is in your yard and how that could affect the delivery process as well.
