How Does a Carport Keep Frost from Your Car?

“Frosted windowpanes….” It’s a beautiful song, until those frosted panes are on your windshield on a freezing morning on your way to work. Scraping those windows is no fun!

That’s one of the perks about having a carport, the sheltering roof will generally mean that your windshields do not frost over, even if everything else in your yard has. The science behind this phenomenon is pretty interesting. It all has to do with radiant heat.

Frost forms because the temperature of your windshield drops below freezing, causing water vapor from the air freeze as well. The roof of a carport, however, actually acts as a sort of insulating blanket for your vehicle. Even though it’s several feet above your car, the roof radiates heat down toward your car, even as your car radiates heat up.

The result is that the air under your carport is warmer than out in the open, keeping any moisture from freezing. Later, if the temperature under the cover does fall below freezing, the moisture has already been wrung out of the air everywhere else, so the windshield never does get any frost.

Pretty cool -huh?

Science aside, when it comes time to purchase your carport, scrape your windshield and head on over to Hometown Sheds. You’ll find lots of affordable options in configuration and style, plus you’ll get the Hometown quality that you know and trust – no matter the weather!
