How to Prepare Before You Buy

Preparing Your Yard for a shed

When the time has come and you’ve decided to purchase a new shed or building, Hometown Sheds is here to help you every step of the way. However, there are things you can do to prepare before you buy.

  1. Determine Your Needs. Decide what your priority is for the new building. How much storage will you need? Will you need shelving, peg board for tools, protective flooring for equipment? Consider what needs you may have five or ten years down the road, too and make sure you purchase a shed large enough to help you grow into the future.
  2. Check Regulations. Before you stop by or set up an appointment with one of our shed professionals, check to see if you may need special permitting by the city or country. You also may have zoning restrictions depending on your neighborhood so it’s a good idea to check your HOA bylaws for guidelines. Many HOA’s require that your shed match the exterior of your home. Our wooden sheds can be custom painted with Sherwin Williams paint colors to match your home or business. If you’re not sure of the exact color of your home, take a photo to bring with you or a sample of your existing home’s siding.
  3. Location, location, location. Hometown Sheds offers custom sizes and designs for your new building, but you’ll want to consider where to put it first. When thinking about location, make sure your desired spot is level, has proper drainage and is clear of tree limbs, power lines and anything else that may cause issues with delivery. You’ll also want to think about future use if you want to add on to your building or create lean to.
  4. Prepare Your Site. Before delivery is scheduled, make sure your desired location is clear of any debris, tree limbs and large holes. Any fenced area needs to be large enough for a delivery truck to enter and easily navigate. Find out more about delivery requirements here.
  5. Measure Your Equipment. A helpful tip we suggest is to measure your large equipment and belongings before you buy to make sure the entryway, doors and windows (if needed) are large enough to easily load and unload. If you have specialty toolboxes, bikes, or yard tools keep their sizes handy too, so our designers can guide you as you choose the perfect shed, shelving and customizable storage for your home or business.
  6. Enjoy! Once you’ve prepared to buy the fun begins. With your measurements, sizes, colors and requirements in hand, we will help guide you through the buying process with ease. We’re here to help you with everything from design to delivery and every step along the way.

Stop by one of our Hometown Sheds 10 locations or give us a call with any questions before you come. You can also design your own shed right on our website!
