Don’t Let the Wind Blow or the Snow Load You Down

It’s almost over, but this winter has proven to be icy, cold, and wet with an unpredictable forecast. Now spring is almost here, bringing gusts of wind and clouds of pollen. Preparing for inclement weather doesn’t have to be a chore when your valuables are already protected. A carport can save your investments from unnecessary damage. As you’ll see in the picture, not all carports are created equal. This spring is a great time to get a carport that will withstand spring winds, and next winter’s snow.

What is a snow load rating? Simply stated, a snow load rating is how much snow per square foot that a roof or structure can safely hold. The last thing you want after a heavy winter snow is a costly accident – a collapsed roof laying on top of your car, RV, or boat. At Hometown Sheds, our carports and garages are created with standard 14 gauge and 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ frame tubing and 29 gauge steel, but if that’s not enough, you can upgrade to a certified building, too.

What happens if you don’t have a good snow load? When winter weather arrives you shouldn’t have to worry about your carport holding up under heavy snow loads. Without proper installation and quality materials the heavy snow can cause the roof to cave in or even worse, collapse all together. If a roof collapses it’s normally due to steel that is too thin, improper bracing, or installation problems. Our standard carports are braced on each corner and on the peak of each truss. You’ll also want to take into account the “snow load rating” of your structure.

How to get a snow load rating from Hometown Sheds? Upgrading to a certified building guarantees your carport will hold up to 140 mph wind zones and a snow load of 35 psf (pounds per square foot). To put this in perspective, 20 PSF is created for moderate snowfall with 30 psf used in moderate to heavy snowfall areas. At 35 psf you can rest easy knowing that whatever unexpected winter weather arrives, your cars, RV’s, boats, or yard equipment will be safe and sound under your new carport – without the fear of the roof failing. Of course your design consultant will be happy to discuss this option with you once you meet to customize your new structure.

Don’t let the weather bring you or your carport down. At Hometown Sheds we’re here to provide you storage, protection and peace of mind from spring storms, heavy snow, and unpredictable weather. Call us today before the next weather emergency, and rest easy for many years to come.
