Will You Choose Gambrel or Gable?

Buying a storage building is an investment, so when you buy, you need to make sure you’re thought through all your choices carefully. For example, at Hometown our sheds have two different kinds of rooflines – gambrel and gable. Here’s a little bit about each one.

Gambrel. Some say that the gambrel roofline was developed in Indonesia a few centuries ago. Dutch and English sailors realized the advantages of the style, and brought it to Europe. Because of the extra upper space this roof gives, it quickly became the standard roofline for barns.

The traditional look of a barn roof is often a huge selling point, but the style is just the beginning. The barn shape translates into room for extra storage and more headroom, without a larger footprint for the building itself.

At Hometown, you can choose to put lofts in our barn buildings to maximize the storage area. Our side lofted building has a side entrance and two lofts – one on each side of the door. The end lofted building has one door on the end, and one long loft.

Gable. A gabled, or A-Frame, building is the traditional roof with two slopes, designed to shed water and snow quickly. They have a simple, low profile design that blends with almost any style of home. The gable roof is also called pitched or peaked roof.

The simplicity the gabled roof allows for many variations. The gables can be on the side, or on the front. It’s also really easy to make additions like porches, vents, dormers, and windows. These A-Frame structures are also less expensive.

Whichever style roof you choose, you have many more options for your building. Customization options include siding, color, doors, windows, and even electrical packages. Our sales staff will help you make a decision, help you with financing, and arrange for delivery. At Hometown, whether you choose gambrel or gable, you’re not gambling on quality or value!
