5 Ways a Greenhouse Can Extend Your Growing Season

Request a Quote

Have you ever wished you could have fresh fruits and veggies more than just in those spring and summer months? A greenhouse allows you to expand your gardening season and enjoy the fruits of your harvest for much longer than traditional outdoor gardening. Here’s how:

  1. Adding a Heat Source. Space heaters or other types of non-traditional heaters will help to keep the heat up during cool fall and winter months. By heating a smaller insulated space, you can extend your growing time in the fall and plant earlier in the spring, too.
  2. Use Thermal Mass. Thermal mass allows certain materials to absorb, store, and release heat over time. Just like the natural progression of the day from cooler in the morning, warmer in mid-day and cooling back down at night. Materials like stone or concrete inside of your greenhouse absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night, reducing or eliminating frost.
  3. Ventilation. The greenhouses at Hometown Sheds come with a built-in fan for optimal ventilation. Proper ventilation prevents the greenhouse from getting too warm in summer months and keeps plants from getting scorched like in the blazing outdoor sun. It also allows air to circulate during cooler months to prevent frost.
  4. Crop Variety. A covered greenhouse allows you to extend your growing season outside of the traditional summer months by planting cold hardy crops and keeping them covered. Crops like spinach, kale, radishes, and lettuce can handle cooler conditions and be harvested well into winter with minimal heat.
  5. Stagger Planting Dates. By planting in intervals, you can have continuous harvests and make the most of your greenhouse space year-round—even when outdoor gardens are dormant. A greenhouse also allows your existing crops to last longer when planted, free from harmful pests and rodents.

The custom greenhouses at Hometown Sheds are built locally from the ground up with features such as shelving, ventilation fans, an entry door, pressure treated flooring in our premium nurseries, color options, and even LP Smart siding for durability. Get growing today and extend the life of your harvest year-round with a new quality greenhouse.
